Timisoara is that place where you don't know why are you going, but you feel very good once arrived there.
We'll combine a walking tour in the Old Town with a car ride in the other neighborhoods of the city. We'll explore the city one end to another and we'll talk about old history as well as about the most recent events. Time for lunch in a restaurant according to your preferences.  Fun facts, trivia and recommendations about food and drinks are included :) .

We meet at your accommodations and we plan the tour. We start with a short introduction about Romania (general information) and we continue with the walking tour in the city center. We talk about Dacian Kingdom, Roman Empire, Migration period (Germanic tribes, Huns, Avars, Slavs, Hungarians and Mongols).  We talk about the first fortification built in Timisoara after the Mongol invasion and about how the city was conquered and became part of the Ottoman Empire, at the half of the 16th century. We'll also see the few remains from the time when Timisoara was the capital of an Ottoman province. We continue with the Austrian conquest and occupation which lasted more than 200 years. Most of the old town of the city was built during the Austrian occupation. We'll see what's left from the fortification built in the first half of the 18th century, but also the beautiful baroque buildings from Piata Unirii. We finish the first part of the tour in Piata Victoriei, the newest square in the Old town. Here we'll talk about the golden age of the city from the beginning of the 20th century, but also about the Revolution against the Communist regime. We enter the Orthodox Mitropolitan Cathedral and we talk a bit about what Orthodox and Catholic confessions have in common and about what's different.

Time for lunch in a restaurant according to your preferences.

We take the car and we continue our tour in the old neighborhoods situated outside the city center. First we go to Fabrick neighborhood, one of the first places in Europe where the Industrial Revolution took place. We see here beautiful Secession (Art Nouveau) buildings, a beautiful NEologue Synagogue and an impressive Millennium Church. Next neighborhood is Iosefin - we drive here and see the most important sights. Last neighborhood is Elisabetin: we'll see here beautiful Secession architecture but also the place where the Revolution Against Communism started. We can finish the tour at Scart Loc Lejer. Here we can have a drink and see the small private  museum dedicated to the Communist Consumer.

This full day tour (~12 hours) includes pick up and drop off at your accommodation in Timisoara and visits to 4 sights. The tour is mainly a historical one (you'll here the history of Romania presented chronologically), but we can talk as well about Romania today. We'll cross the Carpathian Mountains twice admiring beautiful landscapes and we'll taste Romanian food in one of the local restaurants next to the Corvins' Castle.

We'll pick you up around 8 AM from your accommodation in Timisoara. We talk shortly about the schedule of the day and we start driving East, towards Transylvania. We cross the Carpathian Mountains, just like Romans did 2000 years ago and we arrive in Transylvania. First, we visit Sarmizetetusa Ulpia Traiana, the the new capital city of Dacia province, built here by the Romans, right after the conquest. Then we go and visit Densus, a very old church built with "recycled" materials from the roman city. we drive some more, crossing some picturesque hills and we arrive in Hunedoara. We have lunch in a nice restaurant (not included in the price) and we enter Corvins' Castle. The visit will take us almost one hour and we'll see most of the hotel. Last visit is Deva Fortress: we can use a cable car or we can drive and then walk to the top of the 160 meters hill to see the ruins of a middle age castle. The view from the top of the hill is breathtaking.
We drive back to crossing again the Carpathians and we  arrive in Timisoara around 8 PM.

Timisoara might not have the famous Jewish attractions of Josefov quarter in Prague, but for sure is equal generous with its Jewish-related life-stories and historical events. Moreover, brilliant natives of Jewish ethnicity changed for the better Timisoara and surrounding region. Alongside the impressive synagogues, a large number of Timisoara’s valuable buildings were either financed or designed by Jewish townsmen.

All of these above mentioned are parts of the Jewish heritage of Timisoara, and we are inviting you to discover it!

What will we practically do for this? We will follow the general history of Timisoara City, emphasizing the evolution of Jewish community, the moments when it has been in danger, the moments when it benefited from the local tolerance. We will visit the location of tiny Jewish Quarter of Timisoara’s Innerstadt (Citadelle) with its beautiful Moorish Synagogue (seen only from outside). Following, we will discover the tale and architecture of the large Status-Quo synagogue of Fabrikstadt neighborhood. Its poor, abandoned status is unfortunately representative for the evolution of the Jewish community, once counting 12% of city’s population, today only 0,2%. The next stop in our tour is the only “stolpperstein” (stumbling stone) in Romania. These kind of stones are small-size monuments made by iron/copper bearing a brass plate inscribed with the name and life dates of victims of Nazi extermination in a certain place. This will be an opportunity to reveal how the tragic Holocaust happened in Timisoara.

In December 1989 the communist Romania could be considered as a mental-hospital where the lunatics were running the asylum and the “internees” were punished for their sanity. The Tour will start at the location of misfit club “SCARTZ Place Lejer” with a biography of the main character of this period: Nicolae Ceausescu, the cobbler’s apprentice who became later Romania’s “Fountain of Light”.

Further on, Julian, the tour-guide will unveil the 50-years geopolitical evolution that resulted in this tragic historical event known as the “Romanian Revolution of 1989”.
