The Large Square

The postcard image of Sibiu, the Large Square is the biggest of all the historical spaces in the Upper Town. Today, the Large Square is an open-air exhibition of fine Baroque-style monuments like the must-visit Brukenthal Museum and many more aristocratic residences from the past centuries. The space of the Square is also representative for the religious diversity of Sibiu that once meant powerful churches fighting for domination.

The Small Square
The second fortification line from the Upper Town incorporated what we call today the Small Square, the place where Lower Town merchants sold their good in the medieval centuries. Some of the monuments here conserve even today the typical gallery architecture of the merchant houses.

Step on the famous Liars’ Bridge to reach the next attraction of the itinerary: Huet Square.

Huet Square
The oldest part of the Upper Tower and the place of the first fortification system, Huet Square is dominated by the Evangelical Church, an imposing monument built during several centuries, the legacy of the German colonist who founded Sibiu centuries ago.

Old streets and churches

Walk on some of the oldest streets in the city, discovering many old and interesting monuments. Not to mention, more of the old religious monuments in Sibiu: Ursulinelor Church, the Orthodox Cathedral and the Catholic Church.

Cetatii Street
One of the iconic streets in Sibiu, this part of the Upper Town preserves centuries-old defensive towers equipped for artillery fights. It’s part of the last fortification system built to protect the city.

Uncover the breathtaking Transfagarasan road and its winding path across the wilderness of the Carpathians, above 2,000 meters altitude. This is the perfect day trip from Sibiu if you want to add to your list one of the must-see attractions of Romania. On the way back to Sibiu, we stop to visit another special site, the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey from Carta.

This is a private tour that includes hotel pickup and drop-off.

Pickup from your hotel at 7:30 am to make the best out of the day, but also to avoid summer crowds.

We start driving the scenic Transfagarasan road around 8 am and head to its iconic high-altitude landscapes. The winding road takes us to the highest point (2,042 meters), to the beautiful glacial Balea Lake (2,034 meters) and to Capra Waterfall, our final point.

Built during the communist regime, Transfagarasan was considered a strategic road between Transylvania and Southern Romania. It's overwhelming landscapes have transformed it, however, into one of the most important tourist attractions of Romania. Crossing the highest part of the Carpathians, the construction of the Transfagarasan required an enormous amount of work and planning. Its story is fascinating and you'll discover it during this day trip.

On the way back to Sibiu, we stop in Carta to visit the ruins of the only Cistercian monument in Romania. Dating from the troubled medieval centuries, the Abbey from Carta was once the main center of the powerful Cistercian order in the Transylvanian space.

Return to your hotel in Sibiu around 5 pm.
